The Baroque Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace is considered to be one of the most beautiful and historically significant concert halls in Austria. In its glory days, the Mozart family performed here for Salzburg´s royalty.

Every year the Patti and Allan Herbert Frost School of Music Program at Salzburg students compete for the chance to sing a public performance In this glorious venue.

The competition is held during the first week of the program with the performances scheduled during the first week of August.

Application Information

If you wish to participate in this competition, you must list your program, including the titles of the selections that you would like to present, and email it to Gregory Thompson at drt98@aol.com.  You should prepare approximately a 35-45 minute half-recital.  Please state the full title of your selections including birth and death dates of the composer.  Additionally, please include a short (one paragraph) biographical sketch of yourself suitable to use in a concert program.

Try to make your program varied and, include groups of repertoire by American, British (or Canadian) composers that you consider appropriate for your vocal category.  If you have them, you can include a set of works from the Golden Age of the Musical Theater (must be legit).

Accompanists for the concert programs are determined by the resident faculty.

Please be aware that the music you submit must be fully prepared and memorized in advance of your arrival in Salzburg.  Do not plan or expect to learn this music as part of your repertoire for the summer. Since public presentation is the prize in this competition, the level of vocal polish and musical security is a major factor in determining the eventual winners.  Because of the very limited rehearsal and preparation time in Salzburg, this is NOT an audition to do “for experience”.

Winners will be chosen for excellence in singing as well as for the interest of their program.

In no case should repertoire be listed that has not already been learned, polished, and performed.  The winner’s recital is a public concert and tickets are sold!

You will be asked to send copies of any unusual or difficult repertoire. Dr. Thompson will contact you should he require this information from you.

If you are considering competing for this opportunity you should include a tuxedo (men) or long gown (women) in your wardrobe for the summer.
